چکیده

As infection with herpes simplex virus appears to be more common than was formerly supposed, laboratory confirmation of the role of this virus in lesions of the mouth, central nervous system, skin, and liver is being sought more often. The simplest laboratory method for diagnosis is by the complement-fixation test, and a number of different methods of making antigen have been recommended since 1929, when Bedson and Bland described their method for this procedure. The correlation between the complement-fixing and neutralization tests has been shown to be very close if not always absolute (Hayward, 1949; Dudgeon, 1950; Holzel, Feldman, Tobin, and Harper, 1953). A comparison of some of these methods was made during the performance of routine tests for herpes simplex infection and it was thought that a report of this experience might be of interest.

Tzanck smears in herpes simplex virus infections

Background: The diagnosis of herpes simplex virus may requirevirological confirmation. Tzanck smear is an old, rapid, costeffective but nonspecific method that has been recently re-evaluatedas a method for the diagnosis of herpes virus infection. This studywas conducted to compare Tzanck smear and viral culture in thediagnosis of herpes simplex virus infection in patients clinicallysuspected to...

Confirmation of herpes simplex virus type 2 infections in herpes-like genital lesions by a simple complement-fixation test.

The presence of complement-fixing antibody to an early herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) antigen (the AG-4 antigen) was correlated with HSV-2 infection in the sera of patients with genital herpes. Eighty-eight per cent of sera taken two weeks after clinical diagnosis of a primary or recurrent herpes infection in patients, confirmed to have HSV-2 by virus isolation and typing, contained the an...

A Complement Fixation Test for Herpes Simplex Infections.

The serological diagnosis of virus infections depends for the most part on neutralization and complement fixation tests. Both of these have been described in the case of herpes simplex infections, but the neutralization test is used almost exclusively at present, owing to the conflicting results obtained by complement fixation. The reports in the literature on this subject are at variance with ...

Cell-mediated and humoral immune responses to herpes simplex virus and cytomegalovirus in renal transplant patients.

Cell-mediated immunity to herpes simplex virus and cytomegalovirus, using the lymphocyte transformation test and interferon induction in lymphocytes, was studied in 59 patients from 1 day to 7 years after allotransplantation and compared with the results in normal subjects. Both parameters were permanently depressed with regard to cytomegalovirus. With herpes simplex virus, interferon productio...

Correlation of herpes simplex virus antibody titers and specific lymphocyte stimulation in adult blood donors.

Antibody titers to herpes simplex virus type 1 in sera from healthy adult donors were assayed by complement fixation, microneutralization, and an enzyme immunoassay (ELISA). This last test proved to be the most sensitive method for antibody detection. It was estimated that ELISA antibody titers were up to 40-fold higher than neutralizing antibody titers and up to 100-fold higher than complement...
